Volvo Drive Me Project Shapes the Future of Autonomous Driving

In 2017, Volvo will be recruiting people living in Gothenburg, Sweden to take part in their Drive Me research project on autonomous driving. The project will use public roads and involve local drivers who are integrating Volvo's autonomous driving technology into their daily lives. Volvo's approach to technology is people-centric, so the program aims to enable drivers to switch from supervised mode to unsupervised mode – allowing them the chance to safely sit back and either relax or work, rather than remaining focused on the road.

Volvo has designed pre-selected route for participants to drive as researchers collect data about safety, traffic flow, user experience and energy efficiency. Research teams will work closely with the participants to gain exclusive insights and study the driver's behind-the-wheel behavior while experiencing autonomous driving. The pilot program will eventually expand from Sweden to the United Kingdom and China, enabling Volvo to study different traffic environments as the vehicle learns to adapt to various settings and eventually meet the demands of multiple customer needs, scenarios and locations.
